"Jessica Hannah and Joel Smith are the artists of Darkhorse Farms & Art Studio. They both carve soapstone and alabaster. Soapstone is a soft mineral made of largely of Talc, which can be carved easily by hand without the use of power tools. Joel learned to carve Brazilian soapstone from a carver on Vancouver Island who had carved for over 40 years. Joel taught Jessica the craft more recently and she has enthusiastically taken up the art form while drawing on her previous art mediums of felting and ceramics. The work is inspired by the nature of the coastal and mountain regions of BC, although sometimes out of region animals may be seen."
